“Flicker”

This series of images was dreamt up by a current facination of light shaping.

The blue-cyan tone was initially created by shooting a 500w strobe covered in CTB with a strip box into the ceiling.

Something didn’t click so I switched that setup out with a small 200w monolight with a cyan color filter and a softbox, and shot it into the wall next to the model on the opposite side of the streak of light. This resulted in some nice ambient light that was slighty more driected onto the side of the model.

There were a couple of improvised rigs due to a lack of certain tools. The first rig was a 500w strobe with a snoot, several layers of CTS, and photo black tape to cut spill. Shooting into a piece of black posterboard with a small slit cut into it.
The more practical way to achieve this would be to attach a projection lens to a strobe, and cutting the light with shutter blades inside the lens.

The second improvisation was how the camera was positioned. I used a 5 step ladder sitting directly to the side of the model, and shot down from there. This did cause the image to be slightly angled, and was not technically a complete overhead shot.
There are a few ways to do this properly. You could rig the camera to speed rail, and raise it overhead with two stands. Another potential option would be to use a tall tripod with a horizontal arm.
For the close up shots I used another small 200w monolight with a snoot, and bundled up photoblack tape to create some pattern. Maggie handheld the light so we could move it around quickly while shooting.
